Our History The Singapore Association of Nevada (SALVN) was founded in 2002 by AiHui Ong, a Singapore citizen and Jonathan Galaviz, a Singapore permanent resident.
AiHui was involved with and volunteered in Singapore organizations while living in other parts of the United States before relocating to Las Vegas. Being involved in a Singapore community helped her adjust to a new life in a new country and also allowed her to share her experiences and help others alike. |
Jonathan was an exchange student at the National University of Singapore in 1997. His experience in Singapore was not only a prolific and awe-inspiring one, it also motivated him to promote the great attributes of Singapore to fellow Americans after returning to the United States.
Since the Association's founding, AiHui and Jonathan have moved outside of Nevada. Despite their absence, the Association has continued to provide a friendly community for Singaporeans living in and visiting Southern Nevada in the spirit of sharing, learning, networking and creating a support mechanism for the membership. |

Nevada
Located in the mountain west region of the United States, Nevada was the 36th state admitted to the U.S. Its official nickname is the "Silver State" owing to the predominance of the mining industry in the early years but it is also known as the "Battle Born State" given that the American Civil War was being fought the year of achieving its statehood (1864).
Although mining and agriculture still go on to this day, gaming, entertainment and tourism are the largest factors in Nevada's economy, especially in Las Vegas where two thirds of the state's population resides. Southern Nevada in particular hosts a diverse population including people of Caucasian, Hispanic, African-American and Asian background. Filipino-Americans comprise over 50% of the present Asian population. Asians are the fastest growing ethnic group in Southern Nevada especially people of Chinese and Korean backgrounds. |
